Nearly perfect, updated

This is a neat update for the standard mechanical roomstat & fairly easy to install, in my case I already had the necessary wiring & just had to sink a 35mm wallbox into the partition wall. Doesnt require a battery which is an advantage over many programmable roomstats & is easy to program, the backlight is good & the display easy to read etc.Now we come to the not so good points, the touchscreen is not very responsive & sometimes takes several attempts before it responds, this is not helped by the intruction booklet which tells you to "press" buttons, I found that pressing rarely produced a response & a light touch was much better.Personally I would prefer to have finer control over temperature, 1c steps is not fine enough to ensure optimum comfort & the switching differential, temp has to drop 0.5c before it calls for heat on its finest setting could also be finer.The next complaint I am not sure is valid yet until it has been in use a bit longer but I am concerned that there doesnt seem to be any anticipation of heat built in. The standard roomstat has a heating element, usually a resistor, which has the effect of smoothing out the peaks & troughs of temperature ensuring a more even temperature. I have not noticed this happening with this roomstat which means that due to the lag of temperature rise within the flat the temperature carries on rising by at least another 1c after the stat has clicked off. I understand that it has some sort of learning function which tells it how quickly the temp rises but I am not sure if that is used to anticipate heat because its not explained how it uses this info in the booklet so I will update this review at a later date if necessary.Update 1I think I have found the reason the touchscreen was not responding every time, I had slightly overtightened the screws holding the backplate into the wallbox which distorted the backplate slightly from being perfectly flat & when the touchscreen was clipped to the backplate it affected the operation of the touchscreen. Releasing the 2 screws slightly has made the touchscreen respond perfectly every time with just a light touch.I have e-mailed Heatmisers technical dept with referrence to the learning function & to ask if there is any heat anticipation, awaiting a reply.Update 2Reply received from Heatmisers technical dept, says it does have anticipation built in & its called "optimum start" which learns how quickly your heating takes to bring house/flat up to temp, then uses this data to start heating early so you dont have to program in extra time & it readjusts constantly taking account of time of year/start temp. This sounds a very clever & useful feature but its not heat anticipation as used in many standard roomstats.I have switched "optimum start" to on in the menus & monitoring the affect, another update shortly.Update 3Have found that "optimum start" is clever & does indeed learn how quickly your heating takes to bring your home to required temperature, I think it even allows extra time if the start temperature is low.Have also found there is no heat anticipation/acceleration built in which I found personally to be a problem mainly because the heat up/down settings are 1c steps which isnt fine enough & also the switching differential finest setting at 0.5c was giving me a 1.5c variation mainly because the temp keeps on rising after the stat has clicked off because of the delay & residual heat in radiators etc. which meant that the heating would cycle on/off approx every 4hrs not often enough to maintain comfort.I have now used the 180k ohm resistor accelerator that was in the old stat & fitted it in a small cut out in a single pole architrave switch positioned approx 1cm from the bottom left corner of the heatmiser where the temp sensor is positioned & wired it to the switched live, via the architrave switch & neutralusing a short length of twin cable. This is now working as a heat anticipator/accelerator & works very well. It means that the stat now calls for heat for approx 12mins to raise temp 1c & maintains a much more even temperature, before it was approx 22mins & as stated the temp would then continue to rise due to residual heat. I am aware that as the winter progresses & it inevitably gets colder it will mean that on/off cycles will become more frequent but I can physically move the architrave switch to lessen the effect as its only on blu-tak or of course switch the heat accelerator off.Note I dont recommend anyone to do this unless they are sure they know what they are doing as you are dealing with 240v mains electricity.

This product had all the potential of being an easy and efficient way of controlling my central heating. Unfortunately it kept refusing to switch the system back on in the morning after the temperature had reduced for the overnight period.An email to the supplier resulted in a "I wonder what that could be" followed by a phone number with which to contact the manufacturer. Not much joy there other than to return it as faulty. In the end I just kept doing 'factory resets' until one3 morning it worked and thank goodness it has continued to work since then.

missing an 'advance' function

One of the most used buttons on a central heating controller is the advance button. This turns on/ off the central heating until the next programmed cycle. One touch and hey presto the system is on (or off if required). This unit does not have this feature. Instead you are supposed to stand there pressing away on the temperature increase button until the standby temperature is increased to the desired temperature. Then the system is turned on. So an increase from 8 degrees to 19 degrees means 11 stabs at a button. Not ideal.Note to the manufacturers: the installation instructions state: 'unplug the ribbon connector which is plugged in to the front half of the thermostat'. There is no such thing! This caused a bit of head scratching. If there used to be one on an older model, why can't you be bothered to update your manuals?
