5Wireless Programmable Thermostat - Heatmiser PRT-WTS kit
By Malcolm
I had previously owned a Salus wireless programmable thermostat, but was plagued with reliability issues. When the second replacement unit failed I decided it was time for a re-think. I was surprised to find that there were relatively few models that offered a programmable function and were wireless. The Heatmiser appealed as it has both 7 day and 5/2 day programming with adjustable comfort levels, wireless operation and a neat control unit with a touch screen. I'd not heard of Heatmiser, but my local plumber's merchant informed me that Speedfit use their control systems in conjunction with underfloor heating.Setting up was extremely easy, as the unit comes with a clear and simple set up guide. The touch screen itself is neat and attractively plain and is laid out in a logical and intuitive fashion. The thermostat needs to be paired with the wireless receiver, but this was straight-forward and the thermostat communicated successfully with the boiler immediately. The thermostat comes with a back plate so that it can be permanently mounted on the wall, but it also has an integral desk stand so that it can be taken from room to room. The set up manual suggests that the unit is mounted at eye level and this is sensible advice as the screen display disappears if placed above eye level. I found no problems in communicating with the boiler which is housed in the kitchen with the thermostat two rooms away in the front reception room. I had no problems with interference, but it is multi channel, so if there are problems you can switch to another wireless address. The unit comes with sensible default settings, with wake, leave, enter, and sleep times and temperatures already installed. I found them a bit warm for me and apparently I'm an earlier riser than the typical user, but altering them was very simple to do.The thermostat has a blue LCD screen which activates once touched and stays illuminated for about 6 seconds before turning off the backlight. The touch screen isn't as sensitive as that of an iPhone, for example, but works well enough. The unit seems well thought out, with nice touches like a 'screen' option, which effectively disables the screen for 15 seconds allowing you time to clean it without altering any settings. Temperature hold is possible with this unit - it allows you to set a temperature and maintain it for a desired period, as the manufacturers suggest, for parties, or when you will be going out for a number of hours. Likewise, you can input holidays with this unit. In every case, I found the set up easy to use. There are some quite sophisticated set up features. For example, you can adjust the switching differential of the thermostat - this is number of degrees the thermostat will switch on below the set temperature. There is a fail-safe feature which, if enabled means the thermostat will send a signal to the boiler every 20 mins. If the receiver fails to receive the signal from the thermostat, the receiver will activate the output for 20% of the time. This protects against battery failure or loss of wireless signal. The manual tells you that the Optimum Start feature will bring on the heating early if needed, so that the house is warm when you wake up. The claim is made that the thermostat learns the required heat up time and will adjust itself, if required, throughout the year. It will be interesting to see if this is the case! The thermostat has an internal rechargeable battery with a claimed life of 6 months between charges. It is charged via a mini USB connector (lead supplied) - so I imagine most people will use either their computer or mobile phone charger to do this.I installed this product on 1 October, so it is too early to say anything sensible so far about reliability, but at time of writing everything has worked as it should.

4Does the job
By kermit
My house has two floors so I was looking for a wireless thermostat that supports two zones. I bought the PRT-WTS directly from Heatmiser, since they offered a two-zones kit (basically two thermostat units controlling a single receiver). I suppose I could have bought the one-zone kit from Amazon together with an extra thermostat unit, but I didn't bother. For separate heating of the two floors I already had individual programmable radiator thermostats, so that problem was solved (just for the record, stay away from Technoline TM 3010 - I bought 8 and had to replace 3 - after a while two of them were no longer closing the valves completely, the third was eating a set of batteries in 2 weeks. The Honeywell HR20 Rondostats that I bought as replacement are less smart, but they actually work). Anyway, on the good side:- I have no problem controlling the receiver through 3 brick walls, from the upper floor to the ground floor.- The receiver has two independent electronic relays, one for each zone. I connected them together (any or both of the two thermostats will start the boiler). This was the main selling point for me. Negative:- I found the the connectors on the receiver a bit too narrow to fit two wires together in a single hole, like I needed. But I guess I can't really blame the device, since it was not designed for that.- The two thermostats don't seem to be very well calibrated out of the box - after leaving them 10 minutes next to each other, the displayed temperatures were different by 0.5 degrees Celsius. Not really a big deal - you can recalibrate the thermostat.- The touch screen is very frustrating on both units. It is not responsive and most of the time I have to press the buttons repeatedly. Also, I have to look at the screen from about 30 degrees above the horizontal. When looking at it horizontally the letters are only half-visible. If you are 10 degrees below the horizontal they are _completely_ invisible (but you can enjoy a nice, pure blue screen - reminds me of good old windows days ;). I would much prefer classical honest buttons, complemented by a decent screen. I dropped one star for this.

Great product, but not suitable for a twin wired thermostat system. Thank goodness for Amazon's no quibble returns policy.
